Meet team member Johnson Chen, who works at our Kellyville Grove store – our first store to launch an accessible checkout, which was made using inclusive design principles specifically for team members living with a physical disability.
Johnson, who is also studying computer science, was part of the group who helped test out the prototype checkout, which is believed to be a world-first. “It was great to see my feedback incorporated in the final design to make it better,” says Johnson. “It’s quite cool that now I get to work with something I helped design.
“Belonging to me means being part of the community and working the same amount as everyone else,” says Johnson. “[As a wheelchair user], I’m very limited with my job options but with this new accessible register, it gives me a new opportunity to be in the workforce and I love working within the team.”
For Store Manager Evan Jangil, the new accessible checkout is something he’s particularly proud of. “It showcases what we can do for the community,” says Evan, adding that the Kellyville Grove store is fully accessible for team members and customers alike. “Having Johnson on our team is a joy… he loves customers and customers love him.”
“What we want to do is start looking at societal barriers where someone in a wheelchair, for example, doesn’t have the same experience as a non-wheelchair user,” says Aaron Sinclair, Woolworths 360’s Design Manager. “We’ve slowly removed each of those barriers and what we’ve got here at Kellyville Grove is the outcome of that.”
